Built in1774 by planter and government member Matthias Hammond and designed by the renowned architect William Buckland. Ironically the owner never lived there preferring his plantation in Gambills and renting the house. Judge Jeremiah Townley Chase and the families of Pinkney and Lockerman were among those that rented.
After the death of Hester Anne Harwood in 1924 the house due for demolition was purchase by St John's College and used for the decorative arts program. In 1940 Hammond-Harwood House was purchased by the Hammond-Harwood House Association since when it has served thousands of visitors and has become a land mark of colonial architecture regular exhibitions and the home of historical artefacts.
